from Yulin

Post  RandyW on Thu Sep 23, 2010 1:11 am

Hi - a few short words for starters. I know most of you from the Nanning and China forum.

When I was laid off in 2009, my wife and I moved to her home town of Yulin, about 100 mi. directly east from Nanning - in Guangxi, but close to the border with Guangdong. I am presently teaching at the Yulin Normal University. We have purchased a home at Ao Li Hua Yuan here in Yulin, which we just got the keys for a few days ago. Still a lot of work to turn it into more than just another concrete cave.

I'll try to get some pictures up shortly - just thought I'd get started for now.

Thanks - Yulin is a city of about 700,000, about 100 miles directly east from Nanning, close to the border with Guangdong.

They've begun knocking out some walls on the house - more activity to come soon.

Sorry - been slackin' off, teaching, and keeping tabs on the work.

They have finished installing the wiring, and covered them with the cement. They have knocked out walls where we didn't want 'em, and put in new ones where we did. They are now working on the wall tiles (kitchen and bathrooms) and ceiling.

Photos soon, I promise.

I hope the weather's been as nice in Nanning and Guangzhou as what we've had. Since early October, it's been all 60's and 70's (F's) every day, with humidity in the 30's and 40's and no rain. The humidity's starting to creep back up over 50% again, though.

We in GZ have had almost no rain in the month I have been here. They said the other day, "you here, no rain, why..." so, blame it on the old guy.

It has been cool and overcast today. But still really nice. Sometimes in the morning a light jacket is nice.

Good to hear from you.

"Randy, maybe you don't know me ;my English name is grace lei. Tomorrow is Christmas Day and Marry Christmas .I wish you have a good time tonight."

"Marry Christmas"

Just the last 2 of many messages on my cell-phone tonight

Wonderful stuff

Today was our last day of class. I think I'll hibernate for a day or two, and then try to get back to normal

Marry Christmas.

Randy, it has been a great lead up to the holiday for me. The week has had several surprises including me taking a huge fall. But, all is well. I was given a couple of gifts by the student body last night at our annual English speaking contest. Totally surprised by the attention and the cheers from the kids when my name was called.

Amazing how great these kids are.

Merry Christmas to everyone.

Clif and family.

Randy, an update..
About 8pm on Christmas evening, there was knocking on the door. I thought it was one of the western guys from the primary school. It was 4 9th grade girls who had talked the head master into giving them my address. They had 2 bottles of wine and a bundle of flowers. There they were, shouting Merry Christmas. We spent the next 2 or so hours talking about English and in English and having great Christmas evening. Finally they all got calls from their parents and had to leave. But it was great that they went through the effort.

Have you heard of a school in Yullin named EIG INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY?

Post  gingerlady on Fri Jul 29, 2011 9:15 am

Hi,
I found this site online, while I was trying to get info on Yulin. I had a conversation with a woman from the school today. When i googled it, nothing came up, and when I asked her about it, she said they don't advertise with google.

Also, I was wondering if you could tell me--how is the air quality inYulin? Is there noticeable pollution that makes your eyes smart and makes you cough? Are there any beautiful places in Yulin?

Thanks for your help!!

HI Deborah,
I also searched for infor and found none.

Does the school have a website that they can share with you?

I wish I had more info about the school.

If I find it correctly on the map, it looks as though it is due east of Nanning. It also looks like it isn't a large city and that area is beautiful. If you go there, you will see the "real" China.

Please keep us posted.

HERE'S A WEBSITE SHE GAVE ME--ALL IN CHINESE!!

Post  gingerlady on Fri Jul 29, 2011 9:29 pm

Hi,
Thanks for getting back to me. As this woman and I had a long typing back and forth conversation on SKYPE, I do remember her giving me a website, but when I checked it , it was all in Chinese, and I couldn't get an English version. If you look at the initials for the school + to +usa with the regular ending for web addresses, you will find it. Maybe your wife or you can decipher it and tell me what you think.
I'm in Bali right now, and she needs a teacher fairly soon, so let me know as soon as you have a chance. Thanks so much!!

I looked at [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] - was this the correct website?

Either Google or babelfish (Yahoo) will (try to) translate web pages for you - sometimes the translation is even useful

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Click on Babelfish home to get back to the main translation page

This appears to be more of a consulting/counseling service than a school, but you probably know more about it than I do at this point. It also would appear to be a nationwide chain

Do you have a street address (Chinese or Western)?

This is from their "About Us" page "American Explorer International the Group International (i.e. EIG) authorizes the registration by The US government, obtains the United States State Department and the Chinese Consulate In US authenticates. Is for the purpose of for the China and US cultural exchange making communication bridge, promotes the fine reputation school cooperation, devotes in promotes the China and US culture and education development, develops the Sino-US commerce cooperation. The air here is very breathable, none of the typical Chinese pollution, although it is hazy. I've posted a lot of pictures on another site that I'd be happy to send you a link to.

Let me know if you'd like more information. If you have the address, I could probably take some outside pictures for you.

Hey Randy, thanks for jumping in. I thought that is where you were but didn't want to say anything until I heard from you. Did I get it right that the city is due east from Nanning?

thanks for your translation Randy, I also translated it with Google Translate and didn't find anything about the school. Only about bringing people to study in the US.

I will be interested to learn more about it.

Yes - that is where Yulin is. It's out of the way, not exactly a tourist destination, but there's a lot you can see just on day trips

My guess is that the EIG-to-USA thing is affiliated with an EIG school (the International Academy), which would be (I'm guessing again) an English-language school

Hi Randy,
Thanks for your information. Taishan City was quite hazy too, so I know what you mean about that. I would love to see some pictures, do you need my email address?
Thanks,
